Deepavali Lights Safety: Keeping Homes Bright and Fire-Safe
Lights are the soul of Deepavali, but open flames and extra electrical decorations also bring risks. A few simple precautions can keep your home bright, beautiful and safe for family and guests throughout the festive season.
Oil Lamp and Candle Safety
Choose Safe Locations
- Place lamps on stable, heat-resistant surfaces like tiles, metal trays or ceramic plates.
- Keep them away from curtains, paper decorations, flower garlands and fabric.
- Avoid placing lamps on staircases or busy walkways where people might knock them over.
Mind the Wind
Balcony and porch lamps can flicker or tip in strong breezes. Use lamp holders or glass covers, or place them in sheltered corners.
Never Leave Flames Unattended
Extinguish lamps and candles before going to bed or leaving the house. Assign one family member to do a "lights out" check each night.
Keep Children and Pets Away
Little hands and wagging tails can easily knock over a lamp. Place lamps out of reach, and supervise children closely.
Watch Loose Clothing
Sarees, dupattas, scarves and long sleeves can catch fire if they brush against a flame. Be mindful when walking past lit lamps, and keep a safe distance.
Electrical Light Safety
Buy Certified Products
Choose fairy lights and LED decorations that carry proper safety certification marks for the Malaysian market, such as those recognised by the relevant authorities. Avoid very cheap, unbranded items with flimsy wiring.
Check Before Use
Inspect old lights for frayed wires, cracked bulbs or loose connections. If in doubt, throw them out.
Don't Overload Sockets
Use power strips with built-in surge protection, and avoid daisy-chaining multiple extension cords.
Outdoor Lights
Use lights rated for outdoor use if decorating gardens, gates or balconies exposed to rain. Keep plugs and connections off the ground and away from puddles.
Turn Them Off
Use timers or switch off decorative lights when you go to bed or leave home.
Have a Safety Plan
- Keep a small fire extinguisher or fire blanket in an accessible spot, and learn how to use it.
- Keep a bucket of water or sand near outdoor lamp displays.
- Make sure smoke detectors are working.
- Know the emergency number: 999 in Malaysia.
Safer Alternatives
If you live in a condo with strict fire rules, or have young children, consider: - Battery-operated LED tea lights - Electric diya-style lamps - Fairy lights in glass jars for a lantern effect
These give the same warm glow with far less risk.
Shared Spaces
Check your building or residents' association rules before placing lamps in common corridors, lift lobbies or stairwells. Some buildings restrict open flames in these areas.
Celebrate Brightly, Stay Safe
A safe home is the best foundation for a happy festival. With a little care, your lights can shine all season long.
Happy Deepavali — may your home glow safely and beautifully!
