CCRIS vs CTOS: How to Check Your Credit Report in Malaysia
If you have ever applied for a housing loan, car loan, credit card or even some rental agreements in Malaysia, the lender probably checked your credit report. Two names come up again and again: CCRIS and CTOS. Understanding what they are and checking your own record before you apply can save you from surprises and rejected applications.
Credit reports are also widely misunderstood. People hear that they are "blacklisted" or that "CCRIS is bad", often from agents trying to sell a service. In reality, a credit report is simply a history of how you have borrowed and repaid. It can be improved over time, and errors can be corrected. This guide explains the two systems in plain terms and shows you how to see your own record.
What Is CCRIS?
CCRIS, the Central Credit Reference Information System, is run by Bank Negara Malaysia. It collects information from participating financial institutions about borrowers' credit facilities, such as loans, credit cards and hire purchase, including the amount owed and the monthly repayment record over the last 12 months. Banks use it to assess how you manage credit.
CCRIS does not give you a score or approve or reject loans. It is a record. Each lender makes its own decision using its own criteria.
What Is CTOS?
CTOS is a private credit reporting agency, one of several licensed credit reporting agencies in Malaysia. It combines CCRIS data with other information, such as public records of legal action or bankruptcy, trade references from some businesses and other sources, and produces a credit score. Many lenders, telcos and businesses use CTOS and similar agencies alongside CCRIS.
Key Differences
- Who runs it: CCRIS is run by Bank Negara Malaysia; CTOS is a private company.
- What it includes: CCRIS covers credit facilities from participating institutions; CTOS adds public records and other data.
- Scores: CCRIS has no score; CTOS provides a credit score.
- Access: you can get your CCRIS report free through Bank Negara; CTOS offers its own reports and products.
How to Check Your CCRIS Report for Free
Bank Negara's eCCRIS service lets individuals view and download their CCRIS report online. According to Bank Negara Malaysia, the steps are broadly:
- Go to the official eCCRIS portal from Bank Negara's website.
- Register using your MyKad and online banking. Registration includes a small verification transfer that BNM says is refunded.
- Set up your login and security details.
- Log in and choose the self-enquiry option to view and download your report as a PDF.
Always type the address yourself or go through Bank Negara's official site. Do not click links in messages offering to "check your CCRIS" for a fee, which are a common scam lure. Our guide on spotting online scams covers other warning signs.
Check your report a few months before a big application like a home loan. That gives you time to correct errors or settle late payments before the bank sees them.
Reading the Report
Your CCRIS report lists each facility with its limit, outstanding balance and a 12-month payment history. The numbers in the history show how many months of instalments are in arrears. Zeros are what you want to see. Higher numbers mean missed payments. Also look for:
- Facilities you do not recognise, which could indicate identity misuse
- Loans you have settled that still show as active
- Special attention accounts, which signal serious issues
If something is wrong, contact the financial institution that reported it. Only they can update the information. Keep copies of settlement letters and receipts for loans you have paid off, as they make disputes much quicker to resolve.
How to Improve Your Credit Record
- Pay on time, every time. Set up auto-debit for loans and at least the minimum on credit cards.
- Keep credit card balances low compared with your limit, and clear them in full where possible.
- Avoid many applications at once. Multiple applications in a short period can make lenders cautious.
- Be careful with guarantor roles. If you guarantee someone's loan and they default, it can affect you.
- Watch buy now pay later and other new credit. These are becoming more regulated and may appear in credit checks. Our guide to buy now pay later explains the risks.
FAQ
Does checking my own CCRIS report hurt my credit?
No. Checking your own report is a self-enquiry and is a sensible habit.
How long does late payment history stay on CCRIS?
CCRIS shows the last 12 months of repayment conduct, so consistent on-time payments gradually improve the picture.
Is a CTOS score required to get a loan?
Not always. Each lender uses its own process, which may include CCRIS, CTOS or other agencies.
Your credit report is a record of trust. Check it regularly, keep repayments on time and fix errors early, and you will walk into your next loan application with far more confidence.
