Hosting Halal, Vegetarian and Vegan Guests at the Same Deepavali Table

A typical Malaysian open house guest list is wonderfully diverse. On the same afternoon you might welcome Muslim colleagues, vegetarian aunties, a vegan cousin and a friend with a nut allergy. Planning for everyone can feel daunting, but a little structure makes it easy.

Step 1: Know Your Guests

When sending invitations, add a gentle line such as, "Let me know if you have any dietary needs." Most guests appreciate being asked, and it helps you plan quantities and dishes.

Step 2: Choose an Inclusive Base Menu

The simplest approach is to make the whole menu halal and largely vegetarian, then add one or two halal meat dishes. This way:

  • Muslim guests can eat everything.
  • Vegetarian guests can eat most dishes.
  • Hindu guests who avoid beef are comfortable, since you can simply leave beef off the menu.

Step 3: Add Vegan Options

Vegans avoid all animal products, including milk, ghee, yoghurt and honey. Easy vegan dishes include:

  • Dhal curry cooked with oil instead of ghee
  • Chana masala (chickpea curry)
  • Vegetable poriyal with coconut
  • Plain rice or tomato rice
  • Fruit platters and agar-agar desserts made with coconut milk

Step 4: Keep Things Separate

  • Cook meat dishes in separate pots and with separate utensils.
  • Serve vegetarian and meat dishes on clearly divided sections of the table, or on separate tables.
  • Give every dish its own serving spoon to avoid mixing.

Step 5: Label Everything

Small labels are the single most helpful thing you can do. Include:

  • Dish name
  • "Halal", "Vegetarian" or "Vegan" where accurate
  • Common allergens such as nuts, dairy, eggs or seafood

Only label something halal if you're confident the ingredients and preparation meet that standard. For packaged items, check for the JAKIM Halal logo.

Step 6: Check the Hidden Ingredients

Watch out for: - Gelatin in desserts and sweets - Alcohol-based flavourings in some cakes and essences - Animal rennet in certain cheeses - Shrimp paste or fish sauce in dishes that look vegetarian

Step 7: Mind the Drinks

Keep the drinks table alcohol-free and offer plain water, tea and a fruit drink. Note which drinks contain dairy for vegan guests.

When Catering

If you order from a caterer, choose one with halal certification and ask about vegetarian and vegan dishes in advance. Ask them to label trays too.

The Real Goal

Inclusive hosting isn't about perfection. It's about showing every guest that you thought of them. That thoughtfulness is what turns a meal into a memory.

Happy Deepavali, and may your table welcome everyone who walks through your door!
