How to Write Product Titles That Rank on Shopee and Lazada
On Shopee and Lazada, most shoppers find products by typing a few words into the search bar. Your product title is the first thing the platform reads to decide whether to show your listing, and it is the first thing the shopper reads to decide whether to tap it.
A good title does both jobs at once. It uses the words people actually search for, and it reads clearly enough that a human can tell in two seconds what you are selling.
Start with how shoppers search
Before you write anything, type your product into the marketplace search bar and watch the suggestions that appear. Those suggestions reflect common searches. Note the words people use, including Malay or mixed-language terms, because Malaysian shoppers often search in both.
Then look at the top listings in your category. You are not copying them. You are noticing patterns: which details they mention first, how long their titles are and which words keep repeating.
A simple title formula
For most products, this order works well:
- Brand (if it matters to buyers)
- Product type in plain words
- Key feature or benefit, such as waterproof, foldable or fast charging
- Size, capacity, model or quantity
- Variant info such as colour or pack size, if relevant
For example, a title might read: "Brand X Foldable Laundry Basket 60L Large Capacity Waterproof Grey". It is not poetry, but a shopper knows exactly what it is, and it contains the words they are likely to type.
Tip: put the most important words at the start of the title. On mobile, long titles get cut off, so the first few words do most of the work.
What to avoid
Some habits feel clever but usually hurt you:
- Keyword stuffing: repeating the same word or listing every possible synonym makes titles unreadable and may break platform rules.
- Irrelevant brand names: using another brand's name to catch searches can get listings removed.
- All caps and symbols: they look like spam and are harder to read.
- Vague words alone: "Best quality", "Hot sale" or "Murah" tell shoppers nothing about the product.
Each marketplace publishes listing guidelines, and they change from time to time. Check them before you do a bulk rewrite.
Support the title with the rest of the listing
The title gets the click, but the rest of the listing earns the sale and helps the platform understand your product. Fill in every attribute field the platform offers, such as material, size and compatibility. Choose the most accurate category. Use a main photo that matches what the title promises.
Your description should repeat key terms naturally and answer common questions: what is included, how to use it, how to care for it and what the warranty covers. Our guide to product descriptions that sell has a ready-to-use structure.
Test, measure and improve
Marketplace seller centres show how many people viewed each listing and how many bought. Use those numbers:
- Low views: the title, category or attributes probably need work.
- High views but low orders: the title is working, but the photos, price, reviews or description are not convincing.
- Good views and good orders: leave it alone and use it as a model for other listings.
Change one thing at a time and give it a week or two before judging the result. If you change the title, price and photos on the same day, you will not know which one helped.
Titles for variants and bundles
If one listing has several variants, such as colours or sizes, keep the main title general enough to cover them all and put the detail in the variant names. Do not promise "Free Gift" or a specific colour in the title if only one variant includes it, because that creates disappointed buyers and bad reviews.
For bundles, make the quantity obvious. "Set of 3" or "2-Pack" near the start of the title helps shoppers compare your price fairly against single-item listings. A shopper who thinks your bundle is a single item will think you are expensive and scroll past.
Seasonal words like "Raya" or "Back to School" can help during the right weeks, but remember to remove them afterwards. A title that still says "CNY Special" in August makes a shop look neglected.
FAQ
How long should a product title be?
Long enough to include the product type, key feature and size, and short enough to stay readable. Each platform sets its own character limit, so check it in your seller centre.
Should I write titles in English or Malay?
Use the words your buyers search for. For many products that means English with a common Malay term added where it fits naturally.
Can I change titles after listing?
Yes. Small, careful edits are normal. Avoid changing a well-performing listing into a completely different product, as that confuses buyers and reviews.
Strong titles are one of the cheapest improvements a marketplace seller can make. Write for the shopper first, use the words they search for, and check your listing numbers regularly to see what is working.
